Power-to-X: climate-neutral sector coupling

Power-to-X (PtX) and hybrid solutions are always a subset of the energy landscape shown in the image. In PtX applications, hydrogen is converted into molecules along the energy landscape via a synthesis process, but no re-electrification takes place.

  • Green hydrogen

    By converting renewable electricity into green hydrogen (eHydrogen) using water electrolysis, the energy can be stored in the medium and long term and used in a variety of ways in chemical form. This decarbonizes sectors such as industry, households and mobility. Re-electrification takes place via gas turbines, fuel cells or engines.

    Generated renewable electricity for power supply.

  • Mobility

    E-fuels produces by the petrochemical industry can be used for mobility (aviation, shipping, road and rail transportation)

  • Petrochemical industry

    Synthetic fuels such as eMethanol or ekerosene are produced by the petrochemical industry in a synthesis process from e-hydrogen and CO2 (via e-methanol synthesis) and made available to the transport sector as eFuels.

  • Agriculture

    E-fertilizer produced with eAmmonia from chemical industries is needed in the agricultural sector.

  • Chemical industry

    Hydrogen produced from renewable energy forms the basis for further processing by means of chemical synthesis, e.g. for the production of basic chemicals like eMethanol, eAmmonia etc.

  • Further industries

    Hydrogen is utilized in various industries, e.g. in the production of steel and cement as well as in the production of food/beverages.

  • Heat and cold

    Heating or cooling can be provided by electrical appliances (heat pumps/chillers) for households and industry. Feeding green hydrogen into the natural gas grid supports the decarbonization of the heat supply.
